Object Obscura
This thesis is about material dissonance and the digital device. Contemporary devices, such as the iPhone, are ubiquitous; marketed to project utopia while depending on industrial practices that pose both ecological and ethical threats. The role of this thesis is to examine a possible origin for such dissonance; looking to the histories of world fairs; marking events around industrial and imperial exploits; while considering the ways in which modern commodities are detached from their material truths. Using reflective materials and markings found on digital devices, the aim of the design is to perform the uncanny realities of our material world.
